McClanahan Studio is the creative collaboration of husband/wife duo Dan and Alex McClanahan:
The studio is headquartered in a historic downtown Ames, Iowa – the town where Dan grew up and where he and Alex met as students at Iowa State University. The couple founded McClanahan Studio in March of 2009 and quickly established themselves as a fresh and innovative alternative to traditional photography. The physical studio resides in a repurposed sewing factory and includes a street level gallery and lofted shooting space:
McClanahan Studio’s work has earned numerous industry accolades, including being named Iowa’s 2013 Photographer of the Year by the Professional Photographers of Iowa and earning an International Platinum Photographer of the Year award from the Professional Photographers of America. Dan and Alex individually scored perfect 100’s their first time entering PPA print competition. The couple has taught photography at After Dark Education workshops around the country and recently gave a platform presentation at Imaging USA 2013. They have made several appearances on PhotoVision Video.
Formalities aside, the McClanahan’s are a quirky couple that loves what they do! Here’s a brief introduction to our studio family:
Dan McClanahan’s background as a journalist is the driving force behind McClanahan Studio’s storytelling imagery. He photographs all senior sessions and commercial projects, and co–photographs weddings with Alex. Outside of the office he is a drummer, snowboarder, Harry Potter geek, spicy–food–connoisseur and collector of bright shoes. Dan has dressed up as a Ninja Turtle for halloween six different times since the age of 5 and his psyche is heavily influenced by Dr. Suess.
Alex McClanahan’s background in Graphic Design has been an invaluable asset to the studio. Alex photographs weddings, designs all of the studio’s products and runs client viewing appointments. She initiated mandatory mid–afternoon dance parties back in 2010 and studio morale has been soaring ever since. Outside of work she tears up the slopes on her snowboard, crochets very bold hats, concocts delicious experiments in the kitchen and cherishes quality time with family and friends.
