Computer Heads win national award!

We just received news that Dan is one of 3 national finalists for an SPJ (Society of Professional Journalists) Mark of Excellence Award for “Best Photo Illustration.” The award is for a series he shot as a student at ISU (Published in Ethos Magazine Spring of 2008). His photos accompanied a story about student Internet addiction, particularly in regard to Facebook. For the series we hollowed out CRT computer monitors and turned them into wearable helmets to represent a satire of sorts.
The one thing college students are best at is procrastinating, and this shoot was a prime showcase of excellent procrastination. All of the computer heads were constructed and all the photos were shot within a single 24 hour period right before the magazine’s deadline (it was a very, very late night). Backdrops for the photos include multiple college-student-occupied apartments and one very popular grocery store. Also, both of us are models in these photos (some were shot on a tripod with a self-timer) – special prize to the person that can accurately guess which photos we’re in! Anyhow, here are a few of the photos from the shoot. They satire online gambling, online dating and online shopping (and much more!):

Dan is thrilled to be selected for this national honor. It was a lot of fun digging through an old hard drive to find these photos so we could share them with you. We still have the CRT helmets in our garage… There’s a very good possibility the computer head series may be re-visited in the future, so stay tuned…
